Xubuntu is a derivative of the popular Ubuntu Linux distro. Xubuntu is meant to bring the Xfce environment into play.

The main theme of Xubuntu is to offer a Linux distribution that is light on CPU resources, and therefore, is targeted towards older computers. For example, while Ubuntu requires 256MB of RAM to operate, Xubuntu requires only 128MB of RAM, and with a little tweaking, can operate with only 64MB of RAM. To simplify, Ubuntu and Xubuntu use the exact same kernel, however, Ubuntu uses GNOME as its desktop environment while Xubuntu uses Xfce as its desktop environment. Xfce is less resource intensive than GNOME.

Xubuntu is increasing in popularity as people with much older computers using old versions of Windows are opting to install Xubuntu on them, thus salvaging their old machines, instead of discarding them altogether.

Fluxbuntu is another Ubuntu derivative that uses the Fluxbox desktop environment, which is even less resource intensive.
