Window manager

Related How-to's:

A Window manager is software which allows for and controls the placement of windows and other graphical elements in a GUI. It normally runs on top of X to provide a set of functionality to the windows drawn using X. It customizes and controls things like multi-desktop support, maximizing/minimizing behavior, look and feel of windows, as well as many other things. Like most things in Linux, there are many window managers to choose from, and there can be more than one installed on a system. There are also some 3D window managers that have become popular recently. These window managers have gained much popularity with their impressive 3D appearance and desktop effects, that by far out-compete the 3D desktop offerings of both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.

Another notable window manager is the Mezzo window manager used by the Linux distribution Symphony OS, which creates a desktop that is rendered not from GUI widget and component libraries, but from HTML. This makes for simple GUI programming that is an easy transition for the web developer.
