Ultumix is basically Ubuntu unmodified to include hundreds of programs which are available from the Ubuntu Repository. The purpose of Ultumix according to its about page is "[to] accept feedback from current Microsoft Windows users or GNU/Linux noobs and try to solve their problems or meet their expectations." While Ultumix may to try to solve the problems of "GNU/Linux noobs" it is still a very new distribution without users. A more reputable distribution with a large number of users, such as Ubuntu or Fedora, would definitely work better for someone who is new to Linux.
