Open source simply means that the source code that was compiled to make a program is freely available for people to download. It does not necessarily mean that the program is free, or non-proprietary.

[edit] Closed Source

Closed source means exactly the opposite; the source code is not freely available to download. This is not the same as proprietary, but it does mean that a program is not free.
