The multimedia aspect of Linux has increased enormously over recent years. The ability to watch video or encode audio has been addressed in several ways. When reading through these answers and articles, one should realize that there are many solutions to each of these problems, and that you should choose whatever application works for you.

Audio and video playback in Linux has a huge number of possibilities. So many, in fact, that it can be quite confusing to sort through and make sense of them all. Here are the basic "genres" of multimedia player applications:

- UbuntuStudio is a derivative of Ubuntu created in order to be creative. See the Home Page for more details.
- 64 Studio is a multimedia-oriented derivative of Debian. Home Page
- Studio-to-Go
- dyne:bolic is a multimedia-creative LiveCD distribution created by Italian programmer Jaromil, who also created a number of the default applications in the distribution MuSE, FreeJ and HasciiCam. It is also built exclusively on free software (and is recommended by the GNU Project<ref>GNU Project - Free Gnu/Linux Distributions</ref>, and is developed in order to be accessible to media activists and artists who may not be able to afford more professional, often closed-source tools.
