How-To
Installing an Edubuntu LTSP server

This how-to is about: Edubuntu, LTSP

What you need to know to use this how-to: Networking

1. Download and burn the Edubuntu 7.10 Classroom Server CD.

2. Choose the first option on the boot-up screen to install a server. (It is best to do this on a dedicated machine with two network interfaces, one going to a private LAN.)

3. On the Edubuntu installation, the main point to note is that the network interface going to the thin clients should be configured manually, preferably with the IP address:

192.168.0.1

The server's other interface should connect to the outside network or the Internet. It should be configured automatically with DHCP. (It would be nice to get someone to test this.)

4. The thin clients must be configured to boot from the network. Hook them up to a switch that is also connected to the server's LAN interface. 100MB/s should be fine with the thin clinets; 1GB/s is preferable for the server.

  • Don't forget to update the packages with Update Manager (or apt-get, aptitude, etc.)
  • If you find GNOME is not appropriate for your needs, consider installing edubuntu-addon-kde or edubuntu-addon-light.
