Gentoo is a Linux distribution. It is particularly noted for its focus on efficiency and speed and is designed to be modular, portable, easy to maintain, flexible, and optimized for the user's machine. It is named after the Gentoo penguin which is the fastest of all penguin species. It is usually compiled from the source, although some binaries are available. It is notable for being the first Linux operating system to run on 64 bit processors. Gentoo is so customizable that it can be optimized for any task; and being able to compile from source allows the creator of a system to be very precise in their requirements so that there are no unneeded packages, binaries or libraries cluttering up the system. It is also known for its Portage program installer, which is an emulation of the BSD Operating Systems Ports package. It is also highly flexible and surprisingly easy to use considering the expertise required to get Gentoo installed and running compared to other distributions.
