A LiveCD distribution can be booted directly from the installation media, without being installed on a hard drive. Before it installed, while run in LiveCD mode, a LiveCD will usually run much slower because it will have to run from the RAM, and access the installation media for many of its tasks.

The distributions listed here do have LiveCD versions available, allowing you to run the operating system without intrusively installing information to a hard disk drive.
