- KDE 1.0 is released.
- Mandrake Linux "Venice" (based on and named after Red Hat Linux 5.1 and using KDE 1.0) is released by Mandrakesoft. It is the first desktop oriented Linux distribution.
- Multiple corporations, including IBM, Oracle and Compaq announce their support for Linux.
- Ian Jackson becomes Debian project leader.
